The accession of Bulgaria to the EU on 1 January 2007 assigned the country the responsibility of guarding 1647 km of the external borders of the Union. The key to success in the fulfilment of such objective is efficiency and effectiveness of the border police of Bulgaria in its efforts to ensure security at the external borders of the Union and, at the same time, to guarantee the rights of free movement of citizens.
