The next 12-24 months will determine the forward or reverse of the democratic tide in North Africa. Despite internal concerns about the euro zone, the EU has and must do more in the Mediterranean, both collectively as each country separately. The uprisings in Tunisia and Cairo in early 2011 captivated Europeans. For decades, there was the impression that the Arab Street could only mobilize itself by anti-israeli or anti-western sentiment. However, there was suddenly the spectacle of mass demonstrations involving predominantly young men and women who defy the repressive State system to ask their leaders to leave power.
