This article examines the impact of the enlargement of the European Union (EU) eastward on the position of the Ukrainian minority in Poland. The enlargement process shows two contradictory facts in the peripheral countries on the borders of the enlarged EU. On the one hand, there is a development towards greater protection of the external borders of the EU. On the other hand, has become a new trend noticeable within the EU toward greater cooperation in political, economic, cultural and security security with the new neighbouring countries of the East.
