The new European economic area is characterized by increased levels of economic integration between members of the EU and its neighbours in the East. Largely this integration to West implies a growing interaction across the external borders of the EU. This work investigates the impact of the dynamics of integration on the prospects for development of the border regions, which are traditionally characterized as low opportunity areas.
