Within the European Union, internal liberalization of cross-border labour mobility for EU citizens is combined with the hardening of the efforts of management and control at the external borders. This work argues that through the application of a selective and protectionist immigration policy the EU has come to resemble a gated community in which control biopolitical and migration management is, to a large extent, fear.
